Health Minister of Mongolia, S.Lambaa, has visited the 5th Women FIDE Grand Prix in Ulaanbaatar.
S.Lambaa: The 2010 Women’ Grand Prix tournament in Mongolia is continuing successfully. The most famous, illustrious and high level players have gathered here to compete in the most intellectually demanding sport – chess. As heading the Health Ministry of Mongolia which is also responsible for development of sport and physical culture of our people, I highly appreciate this tournament and its successful organization. The mere fact that 9 Grandmasters and 4 world champions are on our soil underscores the importance of this event.
This tournament is the first ever major chess competition held in our country, and is the evidence of growing popularity of chess in Mongolia. As the Minister of Health, I myself signed a decree authorizing the creation of National Organizing Committee of this tournament headed by Minister of Education, Culture and Science Minister Mr. Otgonbayar and I am very grateful for the colossal work performed by this committee.
Our government spared no resources allocating 170 million ₮ for this tournament and our gracious sponsors contributed generously. Our Mongolian people are very proud to host renowned Grandmaster Maia Chiburdanidze since all our nation remembers and values achievements of the 5 time world champion.
We also highly value our best chess player Ms. Munguntuul who with her international career and success helped to attract the best chess players to this Grand Prix tournament held on her homeland and before her loving audience. I would also like to congratulate the selfless efforts of the Mongolian Chess Association in organizing this event and FIDE Presidential Council for granting the rights of Grand Prix tournament. I would also like to note that Mr. Ilyumzhinov, President of FIDE and President of the Republic of Kalmykia, himself honored to attend the opening ceremony of this tournament and laid the foundation of future Chess Palace in Ulaanbaatar.
This event will be inscribed forever in the history of our Mongolia. After winning our first Olympic gold medals in box and judo in Beijing, our nation is again inspired in world of sports, being in center of chess world attention. We strongly believe that this tournament will ignite nationwide interest in chess and especially among our children.
We have showed to the world that all Mongolian people know and play chess, that we have capable players, that we are fit to organize tournaments of the highest rank and that our country looms big in the world chess map.
We are delighted that through Internet broadcast people all around the world have chance to be intro
duced to Mongolia.
Though this tournament is nearing to its end and one of the outstanding will be declared winner, the result is important not only to the winner. The whole our nation is winner having hosted this showcase event.
On behalf of the Government of Mongolia, I again would like to express my gratitude and wish success to all players.
